A recent article by Wendy McSporran (The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust) highlights the role of nurses in managing patients during the transfusion of blood components, notably red blood cells transfusions in patients with anaemia; and reviews the factors influencing clinical decisions in the area. The author explores nurses’ role in enhancing patient safety and in considering alternatives to the use of blood components, including with the implementation of the principles of Patient Blood Management (PBM) in the context of transfusion care.
