New European Commissioner for Health to be Seated
Following the European Union (EU) elections of June and the start of the 2024 – 2029 EU legislative term, EU institutions and Member States proceeded towards the European Parliament’s hearings for the confirmation of Commissionership candidates, which took place in early November. The Commissioner-Designate for Health and Animal Welfare, Olivér Várhelyi of Hungary, faced initial criticism by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), but was eventually confirmed as Commissioner for Health.
The College of Commissioners received a vote in favour by the Plenary of the European Parliament on 27th November and took office on December 1st, 2024.
Blood and Beyond will continue engaging with the Commission and the team of the Commissioner for Health during the 2024-2029 term in order to advance blood health in Europe.
